Microsoft return to office policy has officially announced that employees who live within 50 miles of a Microsoft office should expect to be in the office three days per week in late February 2026.

Amy Coleman, Executive Vice President, Chief People Officer, provided some insight into the rationale behind the announcement. She stated that collaboration and performance improves if people work together in person, and that this announcement establishes expectations for employees after years of flexible work arrangements under the Microsoft hybrid work model.

Phased Timeline and Who It Hits First

There will be a phased rollout of the Microsoft return to office policy. Those employees who work within the Puget Sound area will be the first to rollout the Microsoft three-day office requirement beginning in February 2026. From there, the Microsoft workplace policy will affect employees in the U.S. and then subsequently internationally.

This requirement only impacts employees within 50 miles of a Microsoft office, so employees living farther away will not be subject to this policy as an initial roll out. Microsoft is rolling out this change in phases so that teams have a gradual adjustment, in part to minimize any immediate disruption. The Microsoft office attendance policy update reflects this gradual approach.

Exceptions and Team-Specific Adjustments

The business has also made clear that some roles will not be afforded the same flexibility as others. Employees in consulting, field marketing, or account management roles will also not have the requirement to come into the office, as those roles are more project-driven and require flexibility and travel to meet client requirements. Employees who have particularly lengthy or complex commutes to the office, or who do not have teammates or stakeholders who are assigned to the office, have the option to request an exemption. Requests for exemptions must be submitted before September 19.

On the other hand, some business units will likely create stricter expectations. Some teams may be asked to come into the office for four or even five days. At the business-unit level, operational wait time requirements will be met and there will still be flexibility under the Microsoft new hybrid work rules 2025.

What It Is And What Employees Say

There has been speculation that the Microsoft return to office policy could be a more indirect way to shrink headcount, especially after the more recent layoffs. Coleman responded to those worries directly – it reflects a good relationship with our employees and is not cutting headcount. Instead, it is about collaboration to serve customers better.

The policy will be discussed deeper in a Town Hall meeting on September 11. Coleman and CEO Satya Nadella will use this venue to answer additional questions or concerns staff may have as well about the Microsoft workplace policy.

What It Means Going Forward

Microsoft has put its foot down on hybrid work. They believe the benefits of in-person collaboration created better energy, better teamwork and better outcomes. This decision also comes in the wake of the company’s heavy investments in campus upgrades that were made to foster more collaborative and interactive experiences.

Overall, Microsoft is signaling that it is moving away from fully flexible hybrid models. The company is prioritizing structure, consistency and the human connection that comes from working together side by side. With this, Microsoft makes three-day-a-week office return official, and Microsoft employees required to return to office three days marks a new era of structured collaboration.
